it looks cold and icy, but looks are deceiving. the weather reached 50°F and was perfect for running. unfortunately my legs have been hurting from all those spinning sufferfests. i really wanted to run my favorite route along the potomac that takes me across the key bridge into virginia... took it easy and cruised the route by bike instead (though i did end up running a bit after the ride).
looking down from the pedestrian bridge that crosses over into teddy roosevelt island.
jefferson wanted dc to be the US' version of paris. somehow that meant creating an urban sprawl with wide streets and building height restrictions. that's why all the skyscrapers are across the river in virginia, where they're allowed to be taller than the washington monument.
my love for running by bodies of water doesn't make the potomac any less nasty. plenty of pollution in it. one of my superhardcore professors swam in it for the national triathalon... it gunked up her wetsuit and made her feel dirty for weeks.
crossed back into dc by taking the arlington memorial bridge, which leads right into a view of the lincoln memorial and construction of the new hq building for the institute i work for. i've run by the site tons of times but didn't know that it was for usip until i started working there last summer. makes me realize how long it's been since the last i ran this route since it still didn't quite look like a building the last time i passed by. the move to the new building's supposed to coincide with my graduation from gtown. can't wait to see how the construction unfolds as i run/bike by it more!indoor activity: kickboxing
recovery ride: mileage here doesn't count
running total: 1.5 mi

i really need to visit DC sometime! last time i went was in first grade with my parents, so that doesn't count:) do you carry around a camera on most of your cycling or running jaunts?
ReplyDeletei used to not carry a camera, but since it's so easy to have one on cycling jaunts, i'll keep it in one of my back pockets (if i wear a jersey), or in my jacket pocket. it also helps that i've mastered the art of taking pictures while riding/climbing.
ReplyDeletewhen i run, i don't ever carry a camera except once in a while when i wear something with an easy zip-pocket, and only if i know i'm taking it easy that day and am willing to stop to explore my surroundings. if it's a serious training day, i won't have it since i hate carrying weight while running!
i'm thinking about carrying my camera during the nyc half marathon though, cuz i know it'll be so cool to bust it out when the course takes us through times square... but we'll see haha
