build-a-bike, part 5

we sourced all our parts from various craigslist, ebay, shop and leftover finds. had to make some last minute stops by a local shop, but we could still ride around on it before completing the entire thing.

marc tested it out first to double check our handiwork. safety first = self-sacrifice.

no rear brakes yet.

picked up some housing and cable. then marc made post-independence day fireworks as he trimmed the housing.

tested out the commute to wurster hall (home to cal's college of environmental design). then installed the rear brakes in the front courtyard.

adjusting and tightening the brakes is better with two people.

almost there...

capping brake cable ends prevent them from unraveling and prickling legs.

finished, by the building where i'll be commuting to for the next 6 weeks!

i've had one other commuter stolen from me on campus, right outside of eshelman hall. no more thefts. or else.

the design of a cross bike's frame allows for comfortable shoulder-holds. one day this bike'll get to participate in a cross race. however we're still on the lookout for the perfect bar tape - oranje, to honor the netherlands' world cup run.

with it finally built, we've begun the process of giving our commuter some personality.

this is how i'll be incorporating pieces of myself and my experiences onto the bike, all while hopefully warding off any interest in thieving. so if i see you and you happen to have a sticker you don't need, please share - i'll plaster it on and you'll get to be apart of this bike too.
