build-a-bike, part 4

now for the parts that allow riders to pedal about.

the crankset connects to the bottom bracket, which goes into the bottom bracket shell of the frame.

thread the bottom bracket into the frame with the bottom bracket tool. yes, such descriptive names for bike tools.

more tightening with wrenches. pressing against it with your palm allows you to hold the bb tool steady as you wrench it in.

after installing the cranks, put on the pedals. drive side's got the chain ring, non-drive side's only got a pedal.

time for chaining up the bike.

the chain tool pushes out the pin that holds together the chain link where you need to break it.

no chain's ever the ideal length, even after shortening it. which is why you have to push the wheel back in the dropouts to fit the chain before permanently bolting on the rear wheel.

every time after marc shows me a step, i give it a go myself. (except for fine tuning the brakes, which i'll pick up eventually.)

aaaand the commuter is nearly complete!
