ToC stage 4 san jose start

stage four started in downtown san jose, the silicon heart of the south bay. if it's so close by and you can make the time, you gotta check it out. marc and i parked at SJSU and rode out from there.

riding'll always be the best way to get around a city. marc's on his mountain bike and i'm on his steel commuter.

a few hours after we blessed this cowboy bike with our presence, italian francesso chicchi of liquigas upset htc-columbia's mark cavendish in the sprint finish.

funny how you've got italians riding american (albeit manufactured in taiwan). chicchi's got this custom-made "frank the sheriff" because of his love for american western movies.

by the htc-columbia van, where we noticed how crazy long cavendish's stem is.

if sunscreen's good enough for the pros, it's good enough for the rest of us.

versus' bob roll interviewing mick rogers, who's in contention for the yellow jersey.

one of the rare instances where i'll go out and be a fangirl. i'll admit that i kind of want to see rogers win the tour now, simply because he's the first pro cyclist who catered to my demand for attention.

before htc's highest-profile star - sprinter mark cavendish, who's always in contention for the green/top sprinter's jersey.

like a true englishman, cav's training earlier this year was interrupted by some serious dental problems. i checked, and he no longer has braces. marc insists he read somewhere that cav likes to binge on candy bars, but i've yet to find any articles that confirm it.

watching them warm up a few minutes before the start. there goes US national road race champ george hincapie.

this neat gem popped up on the official ToC photo gallery. what else stands out besides 3-time ToC defending champ levi leipheimer?

off they go, through san ho!

they all did two loops around downtown before heading out toward modesto.

a weekday stage in the US means you get manageable crowds.

obligatory bike-lifting shot.

exploring the shack.

our california golden bear has been usurped and branded by radioshack.

for lunch marc showed me this super delicious vegetarian pho place near SJSU. i hear you - what! vegetarian pho?! how can that be! but indeed, it can be done, and done very well. this little hole-in-the-wall is my new favorite pho place. i'll be dreaming of it every time i get pho cravings.
